Future Fellow Internship
Future Fellows is remaking the internship.
We're a nonprofit that recruits full-time students to do meaningful, paid work on short-term projects with mission-driven employers. Think of us as a nonprofit consulting firm staffed by students. An organization brings us a real problem. We scope it with them, match a Fellow (or a small team of Fellows) to it, and stay involved until the work is delivered. We handle hiring, payroll and compliance, and we mentor every Fellow for the life of the project.
Why now: the tools have changed what a strong student can deliver in a single summer. Students who work fluently with LLMs and agents are producing work that used to take a team. Most internship programs haven't caught up. They're still built around shadowing. We're built around delivered work.
The role
This summer you'll own a defined 2–3 month project for a real organization, with a real deliverable. It should be something they keep using after you leave, and something you can point to for years.
Three tracks. Apply to the one that fits your best work.
- Builders ship. Software, agents, automations, internal tools, apps with real users. Example: a tool that helps an arts nonprofit keep its audience engaged between events.
- Researchers find out. Analyses, market maps, literature reviews, original datasets that someone makes a real decision with. Example: a market map of an emerging corner of the energy and climate sector.
- Artists make things people engage with. Writing, design, video, campaigns, community. Example: a campaign that brings a new audience to an organization's work.
All majors. We care about what you've made more than what you've studied.
What you get
- Paid work. This is a job, not exposure.
- A scoped project, shaped with you so it's something you can succeed at.
- A Future Fellows mentor before, during and after the project.
- Finished work you can show, and a reference from the people who used it.
- San Francisco, Washington, D.C., or remote.
Who should apply
- Current undergraduates, any class year and any major.
- You already make things on your own: a repo, a paper, a portfolio, a channel, a product with users.
- You can work independently, communicate clearly with a busy client, and finish.
- You're available full-time for a 2–3 month project this summer. Exact dates are set per project.
How to apply
Apply through Handshake, then complete our 15-minute application at joinfellows.org/apply.html. Tell us about yourself and share the one piece of work you're proudest of. We read every application, talk with strong candidates, and match Fellows to projects as employers sign on. Applying doesn't guarantee a placement, and we'll tell you plainly where you stand.
Future Fellows is free for students. Employers fund the work.
